Su Shi

Su Shi

Su Shi (traditional Chinese: 蘇軾; simplified Chinese: 苏轼; pinyin: Sū Shì), also known as Su Dongpo (January 8, 1037 – August 24, 1101), was a Chinese writer, poet, painter, calligrapher, pharmacologist, gastronome, and a statesman of the Song Dynasty (960–1279). A major personality of the Song era, Su was an important figure in Song Dynasty politics, aligning himself with Sima Guang and others, against the New Policy party lead by Wang Anshi. Su Shi was famed as an essayist, and his prose writings lucidly contribute to the understanding of topics such as 11th-century Chinese travel literature or detailed information on the contemporary Chinese iron industry. His poetry has a long history of popularity and influence in China, Japan, and other areas in the near vicinity and is well known in the English speaking parts of the world through the translations by Arthur Waley, among others. In terms of the arts, Su Shi has some claim to being "the pre-eminent personality of the eleventh century."

Red Mume Blossom

Author: -- 宋词 Song Lyrics
Enjoying sleep and shunning sadness, she blossoms late,
Afraid an icy look might not be up to date.
Like peach and apricot she rouges her fair face;
Like snow and frost she has her lonely, slender grace.
Her heart is cold and will not seek to please as spring;
Her skin like jade is tinged with the hue wine would bring.
How can she be described? An old poet knows not
But says she's leafless peach and green-boughed apricot.

Tune: A Riverside Town

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
For ten long years the living of the dead knows nought.
Though to my mind not brought,
Could the dead be forgot?
Her lonely grave is far, a thousand miles away.
To whom can I my grief convey?
Revived, e'en if she be, oh, could she still know me?
My face is worn with care
And frosted is my hair.
Last night I dreamed of coming to our native place;
She's making up her face
Before her mirror with grace.
Each saw the other hushed,
But from our eyes tears gushed.
When I am woken, oh, I know I'll be heart-broken
Each night when the moon shines
O'er her grave clad with pines.

Tune: A Riverside Town Hunting at Mizhou

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Rejuvenated, my fiery zeal I display,
On left hand leash, a yellow hound,
On right hand wrist,a falcon grey.
A thousand silk-capped, sable-coated horsemen sweep
Across the rising ground
And hillocks steep.
Townspeople pour out the city gate
To watch the tiger-hunting magistrate.
Heart gladdened with strong wine, who cares
About a few new-frosted hairs?
When will the court imperial send
An envoy to recall the exile? Then I'll bend
My bow like a full moon, and aiming northwest, I
Will shoot down the fierce Wolf from the sky.

Tune: Prelude to Water Melody

Author: -- 张先 Zhang Xian
How long will the full moon appear?
Wine cup in hand, I ask the sky.
I do not know what time of year,
Twould be tonight in the palace on high.
Riding the wind, there I would fly,
Yet I'm afraid the crystalline palace would be
Too high and too cold for me.
I rise and dance, with my shadow I play.
On high as on earth, would it be as gay?
The moon goes round the mansions red
Through gauze-draped windows soft to shed
Her light upon the sleepless bed.
Against man she should have no spite.
Why then when people part, is she oft full and bright?
Men have sorrow and joy; they part or meet again;
The moon is bright or dim and she may wax or wane.
There has been nothing perfect since the olden days.
So let us wish that man
Will live long as he can!

Tune: Song of the Sunny Pass The Mid-autumn Moon

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Clouds withdrawn, pure cold air floods the sky;
The River of Stars mute, a jade plate turns on high.
How oft can we enjoy a fine mid-autumm night?
Where shall we view next year a silver moon so bright?

Tune: Silk-Washing Stream

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Date-flowers fall in showers on my hooded head,
At both ends of the village wheels are spinning thread,
A straw-cloak'd man sells cucumber' neath a willow tree.
Wine-drowsy when the road is long, I yawn for bed,
Throat parched when the sun is high, I long for tea.
I knock at door to see what they can give me.

Tune: Joy of Eternal Union

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
The bright moonlight is like frost white;
The breeze is cool like waves serene;
Far and wide extends the night scene,
In the haven fish leap
And dewdrops roll down lotus leaves
In solitude no man perceives.
Drums beat thrice in the night so deep,
E'en a leaf falls with sound so loud
That, gloomy, I awake from my dream of the cloud.
Under the boundless pall of night,
Nowhere again can she be found,
Although I've searched o'er the garden's ground.
A tired wanderer far from home
Vainly through mountains and hills may roam;
His native land from view is blocked.
The Pavilion of Swallows is empty, Where
Is the lady Pan-pan so fair?
In the pavilion only swallows, nest is locked.
Both the past and the present are like dreams
From which we have ne'er been awake, it seems;
There's left but pleasure old or sorrow new.
Some future day will others come to view
The Yellow Tower's night scenery;
Would they then sigh for me!

Tune: A Southern Song Written at Lakeside County

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Shower on shower passes o'er the hills,
Clear, clear water flows 'neath bridges on the rills.
A garden pillows its bower amid the weed.
Outdoors in liquid moonlight ties afloat
A painted boat.
Frost cleared away on rivershore,
By waterside snow lingering no more.
Afar stands the blue gate to which two mountains lead.
Looking back, I find cloud and water up and down.
Where is the lonely town?

Tune: The Moon over the West River

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Like dreams pass world affairs untold,
How many autumns in our life are cold?
My corridor is loud with wind-blown leaves at night.
See my brows frown and hair turn white!
Of my poor wine few guests are proud;
The bright moon is oft veiled in cloud.
Who would enjoy with me the mid-autumn moon lonely?
Wine cap in hand, northward I look only.

Tune: Calming the Waves

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Listen not to the rain beating against the trees.
Why don't you slowly walk and chant at ease?
Better than saddled horse I like sandals and cane.
Oh, I would fain
Spend a straw-cloaked life in mist and rain.
Drunken, I'm sobered by vernal wind shrill
And rather chill.
In front I see the slanting sun atop the hill;
Turning my head, I find the dreary beaten track.
归去,
Let me go back!
Impervious to wind, rain or shine, I'll have my will.

Tune: The Moon over the West River

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Wavelet on wavelet glimmers by the shores;
Cloud on cloud dimly appears in the sky.
Unsaddled now is my white-jadelike horse.
Drunk, asleep in the sweet grass I'll lie.
My horse's hoofs may break, I'm afraid,
The breeze-rippled brook paved by moonlight's white jade.
I tie my horse to a bough of green willow
Near the bridge, then I pillow

Tune: Song of a Fairy in the Cave

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Your jadelike bones and icelike skin
Are naturally sweadess,fresh and cool.
The breeze brings unperceivable fragrance in
And fills the bower by the pool.
一点明月窥人;
The broidered screen rolled up lets in
The moon, which peeps at you so fair,
Leaning upon the pillow, not asleep, a pin
We two rise hand in hand;
Silent in the courtyard we stand.
At times we see shooting stars stray
Across the Milky Way.
How old has night become?
The watchmen thrice have beaten the drum.
The golden moonbeams fade,
Low is the Dipper's string of jade.
We count on fingers when the western wind will blow.

Tune: Charm of a Maiden Singer Memories of the Past at Red Cliff

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
The endless river eastward flows;
With its huge waves are gone all those
Gallant heroes of bygone years.
West of the ancient fortress appears
Red Cliff where General Zhou Yu won his early fame
When the Three Kingdoms were in flame.
Jugged rocks tower in the air
And swashing waves beat on the shore,
Rolling up a thousand heaps of snow.
To match the hills and the river so fair,
How many heroes brave of yore
I fancy General Zhou Yu at the height
Of his success, with a plume fan in hand,
In a silk hood, so brave and bright,
Laughing and jesting with his bride so fair,
While enemy ships were destroyed as planned
Like castles in the air.
Should their souls revisit this land,
Sentimental, his bride would laugh to say:
早生华发。
Younger than they, I have my hair turned grey.
Life is like a passing dream.
O Moon, I drink to you who saw them on the stream.

Tune: Immortal at the River Returning to Lingao by night

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Drinking at Eastern Slope by night,
I sober, then get drunk again.
When I come back, it's near midnight.
I hear the thunder of my houseboy's snore;
I knock, but no one answers at my door.
I long regret I am not master of my own.
When can I just ignore the hums of up and down?
In the still night the soft winds quiver
On ripples of the river.
From now on I would vanish with my little boat;

Tune: Song of Flirtation

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Fisherman,
Fisherman,
On the river in gentle wind and rain.
In blue straw cloak, broad-brimmed hat on the head,
He comes back late at dusk with fish white and wine red,
Come late with ease,
Come late with ease,
He plays his flute, but who knows where he is?
