The Cricket

Author: -- 唐风 Songs of Tang
The cricket chirping in the hall,
The year will pass away.
The present not enjoyed at all,
We'll miss the passing day.
Do not enjoy to the excess,
But do your duty with delight.
We'll enjoy ourselves none the less,
If we see those at left and right.
The cricket chirping in the hall,
The year will go away.
The present not enjoyed at all,
We'll miss the bygone day.
Do not enjoy to the excess
But only to a full extent.
We'll enjoy ourselves none the less,
If we are diligent.
The cricket chirping by the door,
Our cart stands unemployed.
The year will be no more
With the days unenjoyed.
Do not enjoy to the excess
But think of hidden sorrow.
We'll enjoy ourselves none the less,
If we think of tomorrow.

A Peasant's Complaint

Author: -- 唐风 Songs of Tang
Swish, swish sound the plumes of wild geese
Alighting on the bushy trees.
We must discharge the king's affair.
How can we plant our millet with care?
On what can our parents rely?
O gods in boundless, endless sky,
When can we live in peace? I sigh.
Swish, swish flap the wings of wild geese
Alighting on jujube trees.
We must discharge the king's affair.
How can we plant our maize with care?
On what can our parents live and rely?
O gods in boundless, endless sky.
Can all these end before I die?
Swish, swish come the rows of wild geese
Alighting on the mulberries.
We must discharge the king's affair.
How can we plant our rice with care?
What can our parents have for food?
O Heaven good, O Heaven good!
How can we gain a livelihood?

To His Deceased Wife

Author: -- 唐风 Songs of Tang
Have I no dress?
I've seven.
I'm comfortless
When you're in heaven.
Have I no dress?
I've six.
I'm comfortless
As if on pricks.

An Elegy

Author: -- 唐风 Songs of Tang
Vine grows over thorn tree;
Weeds in field overspread.
Thou whom I love art dead.
独处?
Who'd dwell with lonely me?
Vine grows over jujube tree;
Weeds over graveyard spread.
Thou whom I love art dead,
独息?
Who'd stay with lonely me?
How fair the pillow of horn
And the embroidered bed!
Thou whom I love art dead.
Who'd stay with me till mom?
Long is the summer day;
Cold winter night appears.
After a hundred years,
In the same tomb we'd stay.
The winter night is cold;
Long is the summer day.
When I have passed awuy,
We'll be in same household.
