Song Lyrics

Lyrics are a set of words that make up a song, usually consisting of verses and choruses. The writer of lyrics is a lyricist. The words to an extended musical composition such as an opera are, however, usually known as a "libretto" and their writer, as a "librettist". The meaning of lyrics can either be explicit or implicit. Some lyrics are abstract, almost unintelligible, and, in such cases, their explication emphasizes form, articulation, meter, and symmetry of expression.

Crab-Apple Flower

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
The flower in east wind exhales a tender light
And spreads a fragrant mist when the moon turns away.
I am afraid she,d fall asleep at dead of night;
A candle's lit to make her look fair as by day.

To Liu Jingwen

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Lotuses put up no umbrellas to the rain;
Yet frost-proof branches of chrysanthemum remain.
Do not forget of a year the loveliest scene,
When oranges are yellow and tangerines are green.

Farewell to the Old Year

Author: -- 宋词 Song Lyrics
When an old friend is to go far away,
Long, long will he linger before he parts.
Though gone away, he may come back some day.
Where can we find the old year once it departs?
May I ask whither the old year has passed?
At the end of the earth it leaves no track.
It is gone with the water flowing fast,
To the East Sea and will never come back.
Wine is warmed by our neighbors on the east,
And the pork of those on the west is fat.
I'd like to have one happy day at least,
So that the lean year may not be grieved at.
Do not sigh for the departing old year,
Soon we shall say goodbye to New Year's Day.
Do not look back but let them disappear.
Man will grow old and his powers decay.

For Zhang Xian and His Young Bride

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
The bridegroom is eighty and eighteen the bride;
White hair and rosy face vie side by side.
The pair of love birds lie in bed at night,
Crab-apple overshadowed by pear white.

Written while Drunken in the Lake View Davilian on the 27th Day of the 6th Lunar Month

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Dark clouds like spilt ink spread over the mountains quiet;
Raindrops like bouncing pearls into the boat run riot.
A sudden rolling gale dispels clouds far and nigh;
Calmed water in the lake becomes one with the sky.

Drinking at the Lake, First in Sunny, then in Rainy Weather

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
The brimming waves delight the eye on sunny days;
The dimming hills present rare view in rainy haze.
West Lake may be compared to Lady of the West,
Whether she is richly adorned or plainly dressed.

The Hundred-Pace Rapids

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Waves leap up where the long, long rapids steeply fall;
A light boat southwards like plunging shuttle, lo!
Water birds fly up at the boatman's desperate call.
Among the rocks it strives to thread its way and go
As a hare darts away, an eagle dives below,
A gallant steed runs down a slope beyond control,
A string snaps from a lute, an arrow from a bow,
Lightning cleaves clouds or off lotus leaves raindrops foil.
The mountains whirl around, the wind sweeps by the ear,
I see the current boil in a thousand whirlpools.
At the risk of my life I feel a joy without peer,
Just like the god who boasts of the river he rules.
Our life will pass like water running day and night;
Our thoughts can in a twinkling go beyond ninth sphere.
Many people in drunken dreams contend and fight.
Do they know palaces 'mid weeds will disappear?
Awakened, they'd regret they've lost a thousand days;
Coming here, they will find the river freely rolls.
If on the riverside rocks you just turn your gaze,
You will find only honeycombs of the punt poles.
If your mind from earthly things is detached and freed,
Although nature may change, at ease you will remain.
Let us go back or in a boat or on a steed.
Our abbot will not like such an argument vain.

Song of the Lute

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
If you say music from the lute does rise,
Why in its case will not vibrate its string?
If you say the sound in the fingers lies,
Why have we never heard the fingers sing?

The Southern Hall

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
The western hills are half hidden by river banks,
All the pavilions of this country face the west.
The Southern Hall has windows on the south and west flanks,
Abed, I see a thousand sails and waves with white crest.

River Scenes on a Spring Evening

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Beyond bamboos a few twigs of peach blossoms blow;
When spring has warmed the stream, ducks are-the first to know.
By water side short reeds bud and wild flowers teem;
It is just time for the globefish to swim upstream.

Red Mume Blossom

Author: -- 宋词 Song Lyrics
Enjoying sleep and shunning sadness, she blossoms late,
Afraid an icy look might not be up to date.
Like peach and apricot she rouges her fair face;
Like snow and frost she has her lonely, slender grace.
Her heart is cold and will not seek to please as spring;
Her skin like jade is tinged with the hue wine would bring.
How can she be described? An old poet knows not
But says she's leafless peach and green-boughed apricot.

Tune: A Riverside Town

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
For ten long years the living of the dead knows nought.
Though to my mind not brought,
Could the dead be forgot?
Her lonely grave is far, a thousand miles away.
To whom can I my grief convey?
Revived, e'en if she be, oh, could she still know me?
My face is worn with care
And frosted is my hair.
Last night I dreamed of coming to our native place;
She's making up her face
Before her mirror with grace.
Each saw the other hushed,
But from our eyes tears gushed.
When I am woken, oh, I know I'll be heart-broken
Each night when the moon shines
O'er her grave clad with pines.

Tune: A Riverside Town Hunting at Mizhou

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Rejuvenated, my fiery zeal I display,
On left hand leash, a yellow hound,
On right hand wrist,a falcon grey.
A thousand silk-capped, sable-coated horsemen sweep
Across the rising ground
And hillocks steep.
Townspeople pour out the city gate
To watch the tiger-hunting magistrate.
Heart gladdened with strong wine, who cares
About a few new-frosted hairs?
When will the court imperial send
An envoy to recall the exile? Then I'll bend
My bow like a full moon, and aiming northwest, I
Will shoot down the fierce Wolf from the sky.

Tune: Prelude to Water Melody

Author: -- 张先 Zhang Xian
How long will the full moon appear?
Wine cup in hand, I ask the sky.
I do not know what time of year,
Twould be tonight in the palace on high.
Riding the wind, there I would fly,
Yet I'm afraid the crystalline palace would be
Too high and too cold for me.
I rise and dance, with my shadow I play.
On high as on earth, would it be as gay?
The moon goes round the mansions red
Through gauze-draped windows soft to shed
Her light upon the sleepless bed.
Against man she should have no spite.
Why then when people part, is she oft full and bright?
Men have sorrow and joy; they part or meet again;
The moon is bright or dim and she may wax or wane.
There has been nothing perfect since the olden days.
So let us wish that man
Will live long as he can!

Tune: Song of the Sunny Pass The Mid-autumn Moon

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Clouds withdrawn, pure cold air floods the sky;
The River of Stars mute, a jade plate turns on high.
How oft can we enjoy a fine mid-autumm night?
Where shall we view next year a silver moon so bright?
