Song Lyrics

Lyrics are a set of words that make up a song, usually consisting of verses and choruses. The writer of lyrics is a lyricist. The words to an extended musical composition such as an opera are, however, usually known as a "libretto" and their writer, as a "librettist". The meaning of lyrics can either be explicit or implicit. Some lyrics are abstract, almost unintelligible, and, in such cases, their explication emphasizes form, articulation, meter, and symmetry of expression.

Tune: Silk-Washing Stream

Author: -- 晏殊 Yan Shu
I compose a new song and drink a cup of wine
In the bower of last year when weather is as fine.
When will you come back like the sun on the decline?
Deeply I sigh for the fallen flowers in vain;
Vaguely I seem to know the swallows come again.
Loitering on the garden path, I alone remain.

Tune: Silk-Washing Stream

Author: -- 晏殊 Yan Shu
What can a short-lived man do with the fleeting year
And soul-consuming separations from his dear?
Refuse no banquet when fair singing girls appear!
With hills in sight, I miss the far away in vain.
How can I bear the fallen blooms in wind and rain!
Why not enjoy the fleeting pleasure now again?

Tune: Willow by Mountainside Pavilion

Author: -- 晏殊 Yan Shu
My home was in the west;
I'd vie in talents with the songstress best.
Like blooms or willow trees
I danced new dance with ease.
I learned to sing like pretty palace maid,
Whom floating cloud would stop to hear.
Gifts were showered on me, silk and brocade,
In praise of my skill without peer.
I have traveled for years and suffered a great deal;
It has broken my heart to eat cold meal.
To whom can I confide
My grief and wounded pride?
If there's a connoisseur to come along,
I won't refuse to sing for him my best song.
One song sung at the feast, how could my tears not rain?
With silken handherchief I'd hide my face again.

Tune: Spring in Jade Pavilion Spring Grief

Author: -- 晏殊 Yan Shu
Farewell pavilion green with grass and willow trees!
How could my gallant young lord have left me with ease!
I'm woke by midnight bell from dim dream in my bower;
Parting grief won't part with flowers falling in shower.
My beloved feels no sorrow my loving heart sheds;
Each string as woven with thousands of painful threads.
However far and wide the sky and earth may be,
They can't measure the lovesickness o5erwhelming me.

Tune: Silk-Washing Stream

Author: -- 晏殊 Yan Shu
By double-curtained bower I see swallows pass;
Red petals of late flowers fall on courtyard grass,
The winding rails' shadow mingles with ripples cold.
A sudden gale blows and ruffles emerald screen.
How many times has rain dripped on lotus leaves green?
Awnkc-from wine, the grief to see guests gone makes me old.

Tune: A Thousand Autumns

Author: -- 张先 Zhang Xian
The cuckoo showers
Tears of adieu on fallen flowers.
Lovers of spring would pluck a sprig of fading red.
Light drizzle and strong breeze
Have greened mume trees.
All day long no one sees the willow-down
Like snow or flowers dead waft up and down.
Don't pluck the lonely string,
Or of grief it will sing.
The sky never grows old;
Love won't turn cold.
Like a silken net is my heart;
I can't untie its thousand knots nor set them apart.
The night will pass away;
The waning moon is frozen before the break of day.

Tune: Telling of Innermost Feeling

Author: -- 张先 Zhang Xian
Before flowers, beneath the moon, shortly we met
Only to part with bitter regret.
What's more, I wake from wine and dreams
To find fallen flowers and dim moonbeams.
Flowers will bloom again;
The moon will wax and wane.
Would our hearts be the same?
I'd turn the flame
Of my heart, string on string,
Into willow twigs to retain the breeze of spring.

Tune: Song of Flower Shrub

Author: -- 张先 Zhang Xian
When will the sorrow end to watch my parting friend
From a tower above? Nothing's so deep as love.
My sorrow interweaves a thousand twigs of leaves;
The pathway east of the town
Is shrouded in wafting willow-down.
His neighing steed is far away.
A cloud of dust still darkening the day.
Where is the place to find his trace?
A pair of lovebirds seem to melt in water clean:
南北小桡通。
Little leaflike boats go north and south, to and fro.
After dusk in twilight
I dare not mount the painted bower on the height.
What will again be seen
But the waning moon shining on window screen?
How deeply I envy peach and apricot trees
Newly wed to and oft caressed by vernal breeze!

Tune: Buddhist Dancers

Author: -- 张先 Zhang Xian
Missing my lord, I lean on railings of the tower;
From year to year sweet grass turns green before my bower.
Green as the green he wore on taking leave.
Turning his head, the wind wafted his sleeve.
His gown must be outworn and old.
How can its green color long hold?
I fear my mirrored spring, alas!
Cannot renew as bloom and grass.

Tune: Song of the Immortal

Author: -- 张先 Zhang Xian
Wine cup in hand, I listen to "Water Melody,"
Awake from wine at noon but not from melancholy.
When will spring come back now it is going away?
In the mirror, alas!
I see happy time pass.
In vain may I recall the old days gone for aye.
Night falls on poolside sand where pairs of lovebirds stay;
The moon breaks through the clouds; with shadows flowers play.
Lamplight is veiled by screen on screen;
The fickle wind still blows,
The night so silent grows.
Tomorrow fallen blooms on the way will be seen.

On My Way to New Town

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
The eastern wind foresees I will go to the wood;
It blows off endless songs sung by rain on the eaves.
The mountain's crowned with rainbow cloud like silken hood;
The rising sun like a brass gong hangs o'er the leaves.
Peach blossoms smile o'er the bamboo fence not tall;
Willow trees by the clear sand-paved brook sway and swing.
Folks in the Western Hills should be happiest of all;
They send well-cooked food to those who till in spring.

Two Lonely Isles in the Yangzi River - Written on a Picture Drawn by Li Sixun

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Below the mountains green
Water runs till unseen;
In the midst of the stream two lonely isles stand high.
Fallen crags bar the way;
Birds and apes cannot stay;
Only the giant trees tower into the sky.
From where comes a sail white?
In mid-stream rises oarsmen's undulating song.
Sand bar is flat, the wind is weak, no boat in sight,
The lonely isles sink and swim with the sail for long,
Like mist-veiled tresses of a pretty lass
Using the river as her looking glass.

Written on the Wall of West Forest Temple

Author: -- 宋词 Song Lyrics
It's a range viewed in face and peaks viewed from the side,
Assuming different shapes viewed from far and wide.
Of Mountain Lu we cannot make out the true face,
For we are lost in the heart of the very place.

Impromptu Verse Written in Exile

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
Dishevelled white hair flows in the wind like frost spread;
In my small study I lie ill in wicker bed.
Knowing that I am sleeping a sweet sleep in spring,
The Taoist priest takes care morning bells softly ring.
I, lonely Master of Eastern Slope, lie ill in bed;
My straggling white beard flows in the wind like frost spread.
Seeing my crimson face, my son is glad I'm fine;
I laugh, for he does not know I have drunken wine.

Recalling the Old Days at Mianchi in the Same Rhymer as Zi You's Poem

Author: -- 苏轼 Su Shi
What do you think is human life like here or there?
It seems like a swan's traces on mud or on snow.
See the claw and nail prints by chance mud and snow bear.
Will the flying swan care what it has left below?
The old monk, dead, has left but a dagoba new;
The verse we wrote was gone with the wall in decay.
What I remember of the journey made with you
Is a weary long way and the lame donkey's bray.
